tonightandtherestofmylife asked: Tebow thanks the lord first but he always mentions his teammates next. I guarantee his teammates, many of whom share his religious conviction, don't care one bit about being mentioned second. He always gives credit where it is due and thanks the entire Broncos staff, win or lose. Tim will never be "as bad" as Roethlisberger as far as his treatment of women goes. He did the anti-abortion ad because his mom's decision to keep him obviously meant a lot to him. That was his primary motivation.
Thank you for the note and thank you for the civility. I realize my post came off as a bit harsh, sort of, and maybe the meaning was lost because of that. I never really had a problem with Tebow’s faith, and I never really had a problem with the prayer or even the conceit of “Jesus helps me throw a football.” I did have a problem last night, because there are times when the conceit becomes too much, and last night it was definitely way, way too much. Fact: Jesus didn’t like football. Football didn’t exist 2000 years ago. Jesus could care less if you throw for 316 yards.
As for the “as bad” as Roethlisberger thing, I stand by that 100%. Roethlisberger believes that he has the power to say who a woman has sex with and when. Tebow believes he has the power to say what a woman can do with her body. Whereas Roethlisberger’s manifestation of anti-women-ness is much more violent, and much more focused on an individual, Tebow’s is subversively violent, and much more focused on the whole of women.
I’m happy for Tebow. I’m happy that he gets to play football. But the fact that he’s playing football has nothing to do with the fact that his mother chose not to have an abortion or, rather, was not ALLOWED to have an abortion because it was a crime punishable by death in the Philippines, which is where Tebow’s mom and doctor who consulted her were according to the back story. As that link points out, in 2008 ~1000 women died from illegal abortions in the Philippines. So I’m happy that Tebow was born healthy, and now plays football for the Denver Broncos, because most pregnant woman who wanted to or needed to or HAD TO abort their fetuses in the Philippines weren’t as lucky as Tebow’s mom.
Having said that, I really like your blog. We can always agree on Film Noir.
