Me (paraphrasing): Oh man, I have…THE story idea. Oh man, this is so good. So this guy’s wife dies, right? She’s, like, the best thing to ever happen to him. He’s spent over a decade with her - no kids, slowly alienating their friends - basically she is his LIFE, right? She is EVERYTHING. And then she dies and he is just LOST, right? But this guy starts learning how to have lucid dreams. He heard about it on some radio show. Some guy’s talking about lucid dreaming and this guy realizes, “If I can have lucid dreams, I can spend every night with my wife.” So he trains himself to have lucid dreams and gets really good at it. Every night he drifts off to sleep, hits REM, and says, “This is a dream - I know this is a dream - I want my wife with me.” They go to Paris, Jupiter, wherever. But the dreams become so good that he becomes addicted to them. Starts taking sleeping pills and sleeping 12, 14, 16 hours a day, you know? And the whole thing’ll be this metaphor for the definition of reality. You know, if you’re a God when you dream, who cares if life is miserable when you’re awake? There is this LIMITLESS world just waiting for you where everyone is alive and you can fly and nothing ever goes wrong. How awesome is that?
Friend (not paraphrasing): Oh my God…now I know what INCEPTION’s about.
Me: Jesus Christ.
