My parents dug up what’s left of my old Star Wars collection (I used to have all 115…oh well). Although my Vader was a 1977 original, there’s no way to tell if he had a telescoping lightsaber (and is therefor worth around $6,000) as his lightsaber is missing.

Kind of bummed that Hammerhead’s missing. (EDIT: I see Hammerhead in the back!!!) He was one of my faves as a kid. I cut the hand off of my Bespin Luke while recreating the Empire Strikes Back finale. I remember using a nail clipper to get his hand off since I couldn’t play with knives. I then dunked him in a glass of water while my 2-1B and FX-7 worked on him. I notice the droids are still there, but Luke’s missing. I like to think he’s on a mission to find his hand somewhere, or he escaped the torture I was putting him through.

Once again, Abrams proves that he’s the current reigning champion of piling on problems…although some of the resolutions were a bit too convenient this time around.

But can we just talk, for a second, about this action movie renaissance we’re going through? I loved action movies as a kid but the 80s formula just got so boring in the 90s and a good action movie became super rare. I can’t think of an action movie from the 90s that I simply loved.

But now? Between the Fast & Furious franchise, everything J.J. Abrams has done (from Alias on, really), the revamped Mission Impossible franchise (thanks to Abrams…but mainly Brad Bird…seriously, Ghost Protocol is probably one of my all-time favorite movies at this point), a lot of the comic book movies we have these days, Hunger Games, etc, etc, etc…action movies are pretty awesome right now.

I think it’s because we’re either getting tremendous set pieces (as in Ghost Protocol or the F&F movies) or a lot of movies featuring flawed heroes that don’t have raging biceps going up against insurmountable odds.

I just love the new formula. I love the money that’s going into it and the product that’s coming out.

It’s been a good summer movie season so far, honestly. And there’re are so many more awesome looking big movies coming out!

However, I believe I will go see Mud tomorrow. Because I need to bring down the noise a bit.
